DIY: Natural Spf 40 Sunblock with Coconut Oil, Carrot Seed Oil and Essential Oil

Sorry, dit artikel is (nog) niet beschikbaar in het Nederlands.

In my search towards making my own, chemical free sun protection lotion, I bumped in to Monica’s organic, easy recipe on her (Dutch) aromatherapy website. I just have to share her great DIY with you!

Carcinogenic spf’s

Monica: “Nowadays, there’s much to read about the possible dangers of conventional sunscreens that are for sale on the market. They might be carcinogenic and not very healthy. I do not want to pass judgment, but on the internet there can be found enough info about the pros and cons of sunscreen.”

Natural spf 40

“Luckily, there are several ways to make your own, natural sunscreen! I am very happy with my sunscreen based on natural vegetable oils and essential oil: it has a natural SPF of 8-10 and if you use carrot seed oil, according to scientific research, this can even increase the SPF to 40!”

Monica continues: “The exact SPF is difficult to determine without laboratory because these are natural products, but this is a good indication of the protection. Either way, I think natural is always a better protection than chemical sunscreens. In addition, this oil lubricates easily and leaves no funny white haze behind.”

Ingredients
  1. 2 tbs organic coconut oil
  2. 1 tbs organic shea butter
  3. 1 tbs organic avocado oil
  4. 1/2 tsp organic sesame oil
  5. 1/2 tsp organic aloe vera gel
  6. 30 drops organic carrot seed oil
Instructions
  1. Melt the coconut oil and shea butter au bain marie by putting the oils in a bowl that is placed in a pan of hot water.
  2. Add the remaining ingredients and mix well.
  3. Pour the oil into a clean jar and let the mixture cool down.
Notes
  1. If you are bringing the sunscreen with you on a trip to a hot country, the oil becomes liquid. In this case, it might be more convenient to carry the oil in a bottle.

A little note by Monica: “Remember that this cream is not a license to continue sun bathing without burning spending hours in the sun. Stay out of the sun between 12 and 15 o’clock and always spend these hours in the shade. If your skin has some more color, you can stay in the sun a little longer (but still need to use sunscreen!).”

  3. Hi, I have super sensitive skin and suffer from Rosacea. I have been looking at some sun block for my face, but even the ones that are supposed to be for people with Rosacea have so many ingredients that I can’t even pronounce. In any case, I am going to try making my own. My question is where do you purchase zinc oxide. Thanks.

  4. While this makes you face feel wonderful it most definitely does not work as a sunscreen. I was only in the sun for 20 mins and my face got pretty red. I so wanted this to work. I hate chemical sunscreens.

    Hi,
Does the Carrot Seed Oil work has a SPf for the face?

    Thanks,
    Thelma

  6. This article has so many inaccuracies…but I will address two specifically: SPF does NOT have a cumulative effect. Especially when mixing ingredients. You will, at BEST, get an average. If one ingredient has sod of 7(as in coconut oil), and another has an sod of 10, you do not end up with SPF 17, but rather 8.5…and so on.

Issue 2. Carrot seed oil. Cold pressed carrot seed oil (fatty compile ) MIGHT have minor SPF properties, but carrot seed Essential Oil (steam distilled) is something else entirely. While it is very nourishing, and anti-aging, among other things, it has NO sod factor, and in fact, makes you photo-sensitive, thus the recommentation to stay out of the Sun for a full 72hours after use.

  8. Hi! would carrot seed oil give me a beautiful skin color or it’s not related to color skin at all?

  9. I read that carrot seed oil has natural SPF protection. Would carrot seed essential oil also protect against UV damage?

  10. farhanajhumur

when you say carrot seed oil, is it the essential oil or the regular carrier oil?

  11. I made this suncreen but it’s all in oil form, the ingredients don’t seem to have mixed well. What did I do wrong?

  12. The recipe says aloe Vera gel while the link is to aloe Vera oil? Does it matter which you use?

Thank you so much for sharing. Your articles are really inspiring and helping. But you have not mentioned the amount of this oil mixture to be applied to have maximum protection. Also, is it required to reapply this mixture after every 2 hours like other chemical laden sunscreens? One more questions, does this provide UVA protection as well? Plz reply… :)

  14. Love your recipe! You can also add some raspberry seed oil since that will protect you from both, UVA as well as UVB rays.
